rhythm
When I was a little kid, I loved to put my ear to my mom or dad’s chest and listen to the beat of their hearts. It is a soothing sound. Now that I have kids of my own, I find them doing the same thing. There is something relaxing and reassuring about the rhythm of our hearts. If you look closely at the Scriptures you’ll see that God put a sort of divine rhythm in everything He created. There is a time and place for everything to occur…in rhythm. (Ecc. 3). God created for six days and then rested on the seventh (Genesis 1) and Jesus continued this rhythm when He walked the earth. He entered intense times of ministry then withdrew to seek rest and reassurance by going to the Father in prayer. (Matthew 14) Focus, intensity, rest. Focus, intensity, rest. A healthy rhythm. Often, I think my life’s rhythm is more like the clanging of symbols with the periods of work and rest jumbled together: distracted work, distracted rest, anxiousness. Repeat. That type of rhythm is really no rhythm at all. It is certainly not the divine rhythm God designed us to have. I pray that my life is marked by intense focus and God-honoring work and then equally intentional rest and refreshing times with God. What is the rhythm of your life?
